Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, gained prominence in 2009 with his sculptures One Dollar, ranking that same year among the ten best sculptors under 30 according to Artprice. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him as one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in its work FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, at the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly congratulated Karl for his impressive 2-meter bronze sculpture One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais.
Karl’s artistic journey began at age 7 with collages, encouraged by his meeting with sculptor César Baldaccini. He then turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro while remaining passionate about collages. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to merge his tags with his collages. In 2003, Karl prepared his first exhibition in Paris, which led to his first solo exhibition in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008, he returned to Paris with an exhibition combining paintings, sculptures, and video elements at the Espace Pierre Cardin.
Karl particularly enjoys unveiling his works at international exhibitions. In 2011, he was represented by Bel Air Fine Art Gallery at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One. The following year, he presented his One Dollar works on the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His 2016 solo show at Atrium Gallery in Marbella, Spain, was inaugurated by the mayor, who praised his works to the international press.
In 2010, he was chosen to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world equestrian championships in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture dedicated to the event. In 2012, he offered Deauville his Cryptogram One bronze, a symbolic peace-and-love sculpture at the city’s entrance. That same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he built a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, using photographs from 1945 to 2011, signed by personalities such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.
The artist gained notoriety in 2009 with his sculptures “One Dollar,” which earned him a place among the world’s top ten sculptors under 30 according to Artprice.
