Description from the seller
Nino Calvo is a contemporary artist whose work draws on light and the artistic tradition of Sicily. Trained between the Art High School and the Academy of Fine Arts of Noto, Calvo has shown from a young age a multifaceted expressive versatility that led him not to limit himself to painting alone. His career is marked by a continual exploration of visual languages: in a first phase he gave form to his vision through sculpture and scenography, and today his production extends into photography and video. This evolution reflects a constant need to probe reality from multiple angles, while always preserving the painting sensibility acquired during his years of academic training.
This is a vibrant and dynamic work by Nino Calvo, a Sicilian artist born in 1983 in Avola, the city where he currently resides. The painting is executed in acrylic on a generously sized canvas (100x86 cm) that immediately captures attention with its geometric structure and chromatic rhythm.
It centers around a central vanishing point, from which several straight lines radiate, dividing the space into triangular wedges, like a wheel or a perspective vortex. This radiating structure creates a strong sense of depth and centripetal movement, as if the observer were being drawn toward the heart of the painting or, conversely, as if an explosion of color were propagating outward.
Calvo uses acrylic with a decisive and rhythmic gesture. Inside each ray, we find a sequence of horizontal color fields, reminiscent of piano keys or fragments of visual code.
La Palette: It is varied and vibrant, dominated by sunny yellows, intense blues, and deep reds, balanced by a strong presence of grays, blacks and whites.
The Stroke: The brushstrokes are tactile and blunt, hinting at a stratification that gives body to the work. The thin curved lines that cross the various sections suggest a rotational movement, almost like the groove of a vinyl record or the motion of a turbine.
Interpretation and Atmosphere
The work seems to stand at the boundary between geometric abstraction and kinetic art. Despite the static canvas, the eye cannot stop: it is forced to jump from one color block to another, following the syncopated rhythm imposed by the artist.
There is a sense of mathematical order (the radial grid) that pleasantly contrasts with the almost “jazz” application of color, making the painting energetic, modern, and deeply communicative.
