Paris, Samuel Thiboust, 1626
Four parts bound in one large octavo volume, contemporary full vellum binding. Rare and complete edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in the French translation by Nicolas Renouard. The volume is illustrated with an engraved title page, a portrait of Ovid, and fifteen full-page copperplate engravings by Charles David.
At the end are three works that form part of the publication but each has its own title page and separate pagination:
- Le Jugement de Paris. Paris, Samuel Thiboust, 1625, frontispice gravé
- XV discours sur les Métamorphoses d'Ovide, Contenans l'explication morale des Fables. Paris: Samuel Thiboust, 1625.
- Epistre traduittes d'Ovide. Avec quelques autres Traictez de divers suiet. S.l.s.n. (s.d.)
The binding is very fragile and would be an excellent candidate for a fine restoration. Contemporary manuscript text on the second flyleaf. Interior in fresh condition. Old water stain at the beginning of the second part ( Le Jugement de Paris).
