Description
A beautifully preserved 17th-century Italian Baroque oil painting depicting the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Follower of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino (1591–1666). The composition shows the Holy Family in an intimate, tender moment: Saint Joseph supporting the Christ Child, while the Virgin Mary receives Him with gentle, contemplative grace.
The soft chiaroscuro, warm flesh tones and harmonious colour palette are characteristic of the Emilian Baroque tradition and closely reflect the influence of Guercino’s circle. The tender modelling of the figures, the naturalistic rendering of the infant and the serene, devotional atmosphere point to a well-trained workshop hand active in the second half of the 17th century.
The painting retains fresh, vibrant colours and presents exceptionally well. The surface appears clean and stable, with no obvious visual disturbances. The work is mounted in a later frame but is ready to hang and display.
