A superb patinated bronze bell, typical of Swiss alpage cow bells used for the cows that lead the herd.
Foundry mark of S.SCHOPFER engraved in relief on the outer face (several occurrences), with emblematic motifs of the foundry:
Heraldic eagle (a recurring symbol among the Schopfer).
Haloed figure of a saint (probably the patron saint of livestock, with a cloak and a frame).
Winged lion / mythical griffin holding an object (a symbol of strength and guardianship).
Plant decor: acorns and leaves (representing alpine nature, fertility).
Original wrought-iron handle, sturdy and typical.
State:
Very good overall condition for its age, with a beautiful antique bronze patina.
Presence of an old professional repair (welding carried out by a coppersmith specializing in Alpine bells – clean, discreet work, perfectly reinforcing the structure without altering the aesthetics).
Major strength: the sound remains exceptional – clear, powerful, and harmonious timbre, typical of Schopfer's finest productions (often regarded as the most musical of Swiss bells). No audible crack, with long and vibrant resonance.
History and context:
The Schopfer foundrymen of Saanen (Gessenay) formed one of the most renowned dynasties in Switzerland for bronze cowbells. Their pieces, carefully cast, often bear protective religious motifs (saints, angels, symbols) to invoke divine blessing on the herds grazing on the alpine pastures (against avalanches, predators, diseases).
This bell is part of the great Bernese Alpine pastoral tradition, a heritage object sought after by collectors of Swiss folk art, antique cowbells, and rural objects.
