Mark Spitz is a former American swimmer and is one of the most successful athletes in the history of swimming.
He was born on February 10, 1950, in Modesto, California, and was regarded early on as an exceptional talent. He gained international fame at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he won two gold medals in the relay event.
However, he reached his legendary status at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich: There he won seven gold medals and set a new world record in each event—a feat that had not been achieved before. Spitz dominated the 100- and 200-meter freestyle races as well as the 100- and 200-meter butterfly, and was also part of the victorious U.S. relay teams.
After these games, he retired at the age of just 22. It wasn’t until 2008 that his record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics was surpassed by Michael Phelps. Mark Spitz remains nonetheless an icon of swimming and helped shape an entire generation of athletes with his achievements.
