Vase - Ceramic

Important French faience cachepot with two side handles, hand-decorated in blue and white, attributable to the great ceramic tradition of Nevers (Burgundy).

The vase features a refined figurative and landscape decoration with an animated scene, natural elements and architectures, executed with cobalt blue pigment on a white glazed background, in the style of high-quality French faience.

Particularly noteworthy is the signature under the base, which appears to belong to one of the early Montagnon mark types, an element that allows dating to be significantly earlier than the more common nineteenth-century productions.
For stylistic characteristics, quality of painting, type of signature and overall patina, the piece is plausibly datable to the transition between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century (approximately 1680–1720).
