Wakizashi Sword with black lacquer scabbard - chrysanthemum crest on the tang - Japan
- Edo period (1600-1868)
An elegant Edo-period wakizashi, preserved in a black lacquered scabbard and mounted with a set of handles. The nakago is distinguished by a chrysanthemum crest, a powerful emblem long associated with the Imperial Japanese family, symbolizing longevity, renewal, and the sovereign authority of the Emperor.
The handle (tsuka) is firmly wrapped in rich brown cord over white ray skin, accented with hanabishi-shaped menuki, a traditional diamond-shaped floral crest representing prosperity and good fortune. The iron tsuba (sword guard) is round and finely detailed with radiating sujime grooves extending from the center to the edge, completed by delicate pierced work. The nakago-ana opening contains sekigane copper inserts, with visible adjustments around them. The fuchi (collar) and kashira (pommel) retain traces of original gilding, offering a glimpse of their former splendor. The scabbard features a tachi-ō cord for securing it to the body, and the ashi-gane (suspension fitting, modern production) depicts a relief dragon with brass inlay. In Japanese tradition, the dragon is a powerful symbol of power and protection, venerated as the lord of water and rain, bringing prosperity to the land.
This sword is supplied with a photocopy of the Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate of Tokyo, No. 100960, as the original has been returned to the government under Japanese law. The certificate details are as follows:
Type: Wakizashi, Length: 59.8 cm, Curvature: 1.5 cm, with a hole for a bolt, and an inscription reading "Chrysanthemum crest, mumei (unsigned)" on the face, issued March 31 Showa 35 (1960).
The blade shows forge openings (kitae-ware), light scratches, a small nick on the edge, and a tiny nick at the tip. One side of the ray skin on the handle has stains and a crack due to its era. The saya shows scratches, small cracks, and nicks. The handle is securely fitted. Please review the photos for the condition. Stand not included.
