This is a stunning Oshima Tsumugi kimono, one of Japan's most prestigious hand-woven textiles. This particular piece is a "Iro-Oshima" (Color Oshima), featuring a vibrant and elaborate floral pattern that sets it apart from the more common indigo or mud-dyed varieties.
Oshima Tsumugi is renowned worldwide for its incredibly fine kasuri (ikat) weaving technique, where threads are individually tied and dyed before weaving to create intricate patterns. The craftsmanship required to produce such detailed designs is extraordinary, with some pieces requiring months of painstaking work. This kimono showcases a beautiful array of colorful botanical motifs including various flowers and foliage in shades of red, blue, green, gold, and pink against a subtle background, creating a tapestry-like effect of remarkable complexity.
The kimono is made of pure silk and retains its original basting threads (shitsuke-ito), suggesting it has never been worn. The lining is a elegant cream/beige color with minimal signs of storage.
Important Condition Note: There is a 5cm tear with loose threads under the right armpit area. While this makes the kimono unsuitable for wearing, it remains excellent for display purposes where this area would not be visible. Please consider this before purchasing.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally colorful Oshima Tsumugi that demonstrates the pinnacle of Japanese textile artistry. Perfect for collectors, display, or textile study.
