Description from the seller

DESCRIPTION: I present at auction an authentic bibliographic jewel from the 17th century, one of the most valued editions of the complete comedies of Publius Terentius Africanus (Terentius), a fundamental figure of classical Latin theatre and a reference author in European culture for more than a thousand years.

This work was printed in Paris in 1642 by the prestigious Typographia Regia, the French royal printing house, responsible for some of the most careful and valued editions of modern Europe. We are looking at a book conceived not only as a text but as a high-level cultural object, originally intended for institutional libraries, universities and scholars.

Publius Terentius Africanus is one of the great dramatists of Antiquity, whose comedies directly influenced later authors such as Molière, Shakespeare and the European theatrical tradition. His texts were for centuries mandatory study material in universities and major colleges, making this edition a direct testimony of the classic humanism of the 17th century.

Owning this work means preserving nearly 400 years of European intellectual history.

Unique heraldic ex libris: it belonged to Benedictus Goy, Knight (Equites) and lawyer (Advocati) in the courts of Paris and Lyon (In Curiis Paris. Et Lugdun.), which gives it exceptional historical and documentary value.

YEAR OF PUBLICATION: Paris (France) 1642

LANGUAGE: Latin (Original Version)

SIZE AND PAGRINATION: Dimensions: 39 x 27 cm. Pagination: [1] + engraved title + 286 pp. SOUGHT-AFTER COMPLETE WORK

CONDITION: Full-leather binding, in good overall condition with some rubbing and wear, as shown in the photos. Six raised spine bands decorated with beautiful gold motifs inspired by vegetal design and tejuelo. The interior is in good overall condition, as the photos show.

SOUGHT AFTER AND DESIRED COPY OF TERENCE'S COMEDIES IN FOLIO. DO NOT LET IT SLIP AWAY.
