Description
This work aligns with Rom av.JC's research on skateboarding as a cultural artifact and a medium of visual memory.
The board pays homage to the famous panther graphic associated with American skater Natas Kaupas, a major icon of the 1980s skate scene. Rather than reproduce the image literally, the artist offers a material and symbolic reinterpretation. The surface of the skateboard is carved out to accommodate two textile fields. The upper part develops a composition of successive arcades, formed by volumes of white raw wool, rhythmically punctuated by threads in orange and gold hues. The lower part structures the space into horizontal bands alternating dense fibers and tighter weaves.
The panther, historically associated with speed, power, and agility, becomes here a suggested presence. The graphic image stemming from skate culture is transformed into organic matter, almost archaic. The visual violence of the original motif is absorbed by the softness of the wool and the slowness of the textile gesture. The skateboard, a utilitarian object marked by use, is moved into the sculptural and mural field. Thus the work interrogates the transmission of skate’s visual icons, their transformation and their inscription in an expanded temporality.
Provenance
Artist's studio, France.
The artist's private collection up to the present sale.
Documentation
Certificate of authenticity signed by the artist provided with the artwork.
Invoice issued by the artist.
State
Very good overall condition.
The skateboard bears subtle natural irregularities stemming from its recycled origin (minimal signs of wear and variations in the wood), deliberately integrated into the artistic concept.
The textile elements are securely attached. No restoration.
Stylistic remarks (optional)
This work is part of Rom av.JC's contemporary practice, which explores transforming used skateboards into hybrid artistic objects, blending sculpture, references to craft, and formal reinterpretation. The use of natural fibers reinforces the material and tactile dimension of the medium.
