Description from the seller
Virgin with the Child - Romanesque Style
Exquisite religious sculpture in hard plaster depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus, crafted with artistic care in imitation of the old medieval Romanesque wooden carvings. It is a devotional piece of undoubted quality that fuses modern ceramic technique with sacred iconography from the 11th-13th centuries, creating an object that is at once a work of art and an element of veneration.
The most notable peculiarity of this work is its finish, which masterfully imitates the texture, color, and aged appearance of carved wood, achieving a very convincing optical illusion. The piece is designed to be hung on a wall, allowing the creation of a focal point for spiritual contemplation in any interior.
The Romanesque Period (11th-13th centuries):
Romanesque art was the great medieval aesthetic revolution that transformed European artistic expression. After the fall of the Roman Empire and the medieval darkness, a new style emerged that sought to express:
Monumentality and solidity: In contrast to the delicacy of Carolingian art, Romanesque emphasized strength and eternity
Robust Christian faith: The Church, strengthened, commissioned grand-scale works to reinforce its spiritual power.
Visual narrative: Romanesque sculpture served an educational purpose, teaching the illiterate faithful the Christian faith through images that were understandable.
The Virgin and Child in Romanesque Art:
One of the most revered subjects was the Virgin seated with the Child on her lap, known in Latin as "Sedes Sapientiae" (Throne of Wisdom). This representation has very ancient roots:
Classical influences: Medieval theologians recognized that the image referred to ancient representations of the goddess Isis with the child Horus, transmuted into a Christian context.
Symbolic significance: The Virgin is not only a protective mother, but a Heavenly Throne where Divine Wisdom sits (the Christ Child). The posture is hieratic, formal, emphasizing spiritual royalty.
Romanesque visual characteristics:
Frontal and symmetrical proportion (perfect frontal view)
Faces with a certain rigidity of expression, but with a pious intention.
Defined and geometric folds of clothing
Both figures (the Virgin and the Child) crowned, alluding to their celestial royalty.
Gesticulating hands with a narrative intention (blessings, offerings)
Dimensions:
Height: 40 cm.
Width: Approximately 12 cm.
