Description from the seller
1942 original Jeep - Very rare transitional Slat Grill model with the original badge on the chassis.
Very rare original 1942 Jeep, transitional model, restored with care and dedication by true enthusiasts. This vehicle represents a unique piece in the history of military and collectible automotive, given its rarity and perfect state of preservation.
This Jeep in particular has a fascinating history; at the end of April 1945 the Allies managed to breach the German defenses, reached Bologna, and extended through the Po Valley, pursuing retreating German troops. A Polish column was sent in the direction of Molinella. This Jeep, towing its Bantam trailer, was strafed by a German fighter near the countryside around Molinella and then ended up in a large irrigation channel. The soldiers aboard unfortunately did not survive.
The jeep was in poor condition and was abandoned on the spot by the Allies. The farmer who managed the field adjoining the road recovered the vehicle and transformed it into a fruit-picking cart with a Lombardini engine, leaving the entire chassis intact. Only the body shell was removed.
The original trailer in excellent condition is still inside a ruined barn. I was sent a photo in which the trailer can be seen beneath the beams that still cover the trailer like a cap. I was not able to contact the owners/heirs of the field; otherwise I would have recovered it.
I recovered the fruit-picking cart to obtain spare parts, already owning a 1943 jeep. Investigating the chassis I made the wonderful discovery: the original badge with the chassis number linking the jeep to the Slat Grill transitional model. Having various spare parts at my disposal and performing some exchanges, I managed to find an original Slat Grill body shell and a contemporaneous engine and put the jeep back together.
The engine has also successfully passed high-temperature stress tests to verify its heat resistance. The result is truly excellent.
I equipped the Jeep as a medical ambulance with all original accessories:
- Additional headlamp to illuminate the surroundings
- Original Waltham clock, also mounted on Sherman tanks
- Original aviation compass
- Stretcher
- Medical bags
- Additional fuel can
- Original tool set
- American helmet for medical personnel
Currently the vehicle runs as an agricultural vehicle, which offers numerous cost-management advantages and allows the vehicle to have an original green 1950s era plate. Under the new regulations, switching to a contemporaneous civilian plate is quite simple, so if desired, it is a path that could be pursued.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
