Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798–1875) was a French painter and lithographer, a central figure of Romanticism and a close friend of masters such as Eugène Delacroix and Richard Parkes Bonington. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Girodet-Trioson, Colin stood out for a vibrant style and great thematic versatility. His oeuvre ranges from historical and literary subjects—often inspired by the works of Shakespeare, Byron, and Victor Hugo—to genre scenes and exotic landscapes. He regularly participated in the Paris Salon, earning numerous accolades and prestigious commissions, including decorations for important Parisian churches. In addition to oil painting, he was a highly skilled watercolorist and lithographer, helping to spread the taste for Romantic aesthetics throughout Europe. His ability to capture dynamism and emotion made him one of the most representative artists of his time, leaving a legacy that profoundly influenced the next generation.
