Biography
Born in the heart of the Ligurian Riviera, Mario Berrino dedicated his life to enriching Alassio culturally and socially. As a painter, he captured in his works the beauty of the Ligurian landscapes and the essence of local life, helping to break down boundaries and spread Alassio's image around the world. His canvases, often characterized by vivid colors and a keen attention to detail, remain a testament to his great artistic talent.
But Berrino is perhaps even better known for his work at Caffè Roma, a meeting place for artists, intellectuals, and tourists. Under his management, Caffè Roma was not just a bar, but a true cultural center where ideas and creativity always found space. Here, Berrino knew how to create a unique, welcoming, and vibrant atmosphere that drew prominent figures from the world of art and entertainment.
The idea of the Muretto di Alassio, born precisely from the intuition of Mario Berrino, with the collaboration of Ernest Hemingway, transformed a simple low wall into an iconic monument of the city. Decorated with tiles signed by celebrities from all over the world, the Muretto has become a symbol of Alassio, a place where past and present meet, celebrating art, culture and sport in an original way.
He was a volcano of ideas. His idea of the Miss Muretto beauty contest, or the Aria Pura of Alassio, sold in jars for 500 lire and exported to half of Europe, or the Festa degli Innamorati where the most beautiful love letter is awarded on the Muretto on Valentine's Day, which continues to this day. Moreover, it was he who created the logo of the “kissing fish,” used by the city of Alassio as a logo on several occasions.
Thirteen years after his passing, Mario Berrino continues to live in the hearts of the people of Alassio and of all those who had the privilege to know him, to admire his work and to appreciate his energy. His cultural and artistic legacy remains alive through his works, the Caffè Roma and the Muretto di Alassio, which continue to attract visitors from all over the world.
A painter, an innovator, a man of great culture whose vision and dedication have enriched and will continue to enrich Alassio for future generations.
