De lantaarn van Diogenes, illustrated by W.P. van Geldorp, is a Dutch first edition hardback with 120 pages, published in Rotterdam by W.P. van Geldorp in 1880–1881.
Description from the seller
Full title: De lantaarn van Diogenes : ernst en luim uit den ouden en nieuwen tijd : Diogenes leven, voorvallen uit het leven van beroemde mannen tot op heden.
All 24 issues of two full years of this rare and obscure Dutch satirical periodical from around 1880. The aim was to lampoon politics, society, and culture, the name of which was inspired by the philosopher Diogenes's lantern - seeking truth amid pretence.
It is a curious mix of caricatures of contemporary culture (showing anarchists and political protest) and classical scenes from Greek culture.
Each issue has one explanatory sheet, and four engraved plates. So, a total of 24 sheets and 96 plates.
Bound in a large (and heavy) album style red hardback binding. Edges are rubbed. Gilt title to front board.
Internally, has some light foxing throughout - but overall in a good state.
26 x 37 cm
Apologies for the shipping cost - this item is almost 5 kg packed.
