A city fervent with commerce, crossroads of nations and races, due to historical contingencies and precise political and cultural choices, Trieste lived the nineteenth century as a golden age, of which imposing testimonies remain in the numerous buildings that, perhaps a unique case in Italy, profoundly changed, from the very beginning of the century, the appearance of the great Adriatic port. But Trieste, tied to Italy by unbreakable bonds of history, culture, and political passion, lived the nineteenth century also as a continuous drama of frustrated national ideals, of hopes that transcend mere hope.

In the volume, through the brilliant introduction by Valentino Brosio and the selected period texts, this variegated and rich reality is faithfully presented. Indeed, the most beautiful pages dedicated by Giuseppe Caprin to the city's social and cultural life in the early decades of the century are reproduced, as well as the refined guide to the city, desired by some of the era’s most illustrious Triestines, such as Kandler and Revoltella. At the end of the book, the memories full of love and of anger by Scipio Slataper, one of the major figures in that young generation who paid, even with his life, the irrefrenable longing to be reunited with the Italian homeland.

An abundance of engravings, carefully selected from those produced in the nineteenth century for Trieste, enriches the volume, which can truly be regarded as an exceptional tribute from Italian publishing to the City of San Giusto.
