Description from the seller
“Fathom” (2026)
Oil on canvas
170 x 140 cm
A female figure in profile emerges from deep blue oil paint through meticulous removal techniques. VANTA has carved this form from a uniform blue foundation, creating all tonal variation by controlling how much pigment to remove - lighter where more paint has been taken away, darker where the original application remains. The side view captures a moment of quiet contemplation, the profile revealing delicate features and subtle anatomical details achieved within this monochrome palette.
The removal work shows remarkable precision in suggesting both form and texture, facial features, skin, the curve of neck and shoulder all defined through graduated paint removal rather than additive mark-making. Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki. The technique creates an ethereal quality, as if the figure exists just barely in the visible spectrum, perpetually on the threshold between presence and dissolution.
The substantial vertical format gives the profile room to establish its presence while maintaining enough surrounding blue darkness to create atmosphere and depth. Light seems to find the figure from within the blue field itself, illuminating form through absence.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
