Description from the seller
Valencian School, 19th Century
Portrait of a gentleman, ca. late 19th century
Oil on canvas
An interesting half-length male portrait, depicting a bearded gentleman, elegantly dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie, in a relaxed pose with a raised gaze, which gives the composition a strongly introspective and psychological character.
The work stands out for its accurate treatment of the face, with special attention to fleshy modeling, serene expression, and the careful rendering of the beard and hair, achieved with loose yet controlled brushstrokes. The neutral background, in brownish and grey tones, reinforces the figure and responds to the academic canons of 19th-century bourgeois portraiture.
It bears a signature in the lower right corner, done in red, awaiting final study, as well as a handwritten inscription on the reverse that documents the commissioned nature of the work and its dating, yielding notable historical and documentary interest.
A work that can be placed within the portrait tradition of the Valencian School in the 19th century, linked to academic realism and private-commission painting. It is preserved with an antique frame, in keeping with the overall ensemble.
From a private collection.
