This is a highly atmospheric antique Japanese fireplace pot hanger, traditionally called 'jizaikagi', which was suspended above the irori (sunken hearth) in Japanese farmhouses. Used to control the height of kettles and cooking pots over an open flame, the jizaikagi represents a remarkable fusion of daily utility and decorative craftsmanship.
The most distinctive feature of this piece is the beautifully hand-carved wooden sea bream (tai) motif. The use of fish in jizaikagi design carries symbolic meaning. As creatures of water that never close their eyes, fish were believed to offer protection against fire and served as a talisman for vigilance in guarding the household hearth. In addition, the sea bream is traditionally regarded as an auspicious motif in Japan, associated with celebration and good fortune due to its phonetic link to the word medetai, meaning joyful or fortunate.
The long vertical shaft, carved in imitation of bamboo, has developed a rich amber patina over time through prolonged exposure to soot and smoke from the hearth fire. This deep surface character is the result of genuine age and use, producing a texture and tonal depth that cannot be replicated by modern finishing techniques.
Fair to good antique condition. This piece shows natural signs of age including surface wear, scratches, and minor cracks. These features enhance its authenticity as Japanese folk craft. The adjustable mechanism remains functional. Please refer to the photos for details.
