AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Finely carved ivory rasp (tobacco rasp or snuff rasp), oval and slightly tapering model. The front is richly decorated in high relief with a classical mythological scene: a semi-nude female figure at rest, flanked by two naked youths (putti or mythological figures), captured within a rococo cartouche. At the top there is a mascaron with a curly foliate ornament; at the bottom a woman's head within a shell- or leaf-motif.

The detailing is refined and plastically rendered, with attention to anatomy and drapery. The ivory shows a warm, light yellow patina with natural discolorations and some stress lines fitting age.

The rear features the original perforated metal rasp plate, heavily oxidized, indicating actual use. The object is fully functional and not merely decorative.

Function
Such rasps were used for finely grating:
- tobacco
- spices
- sometimes perfume or medicinal substances

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, richly carved examples were status symbols and personal luxury objects.

France, Dieppe
Dating: circa 1780–1820.
In good condition, small damage to the rear.

The quality of the carving suggests a specialized craftsman, possibly made for a well-to-do audience.

Comes with expert statement and an EU CITES certificate.
