In 1858, Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, heir to a winery in Elciego, founded the Marqués de Riscal winery, applying the most innovative techniques used in France. He hired Jean Pineau, a master winemaker, to advise Alava producers.
At the 1895 Bordeaux International Exposition, Marqués de Riscal became the first non-French winery to receive the Diploma of Honor.
