Description from the seller
The work immediately presents itself as an unlikely, poetic encounter between the effervescence of popular culture and the serenity of the vegetal world. By choosing lichen paper as a support, the artist performs a transmutation of the iconic figure of “Bob,” removing him from his synthetic universe to place him in a natural, pure setting. This paper, with its rough surface and almost living texture, does not simply bear the drawing; it absorbs it, creating a visual symbiosis where the lichen fibers seem to extend the pores of the sponge.
The character unfolds with unexpected gentleness, its contours fading slightly into the reliefs of the support to avoid any abrupt rupture with the material. The yellow pigments, applied with a subtlety that evokes watercolor or plant tones, do not impose themselves as a uniform mass but diffuse delicately through the fibrous interlacing. This transparency allows the support to breathe, offering the eye a constant play of light where the silvery gray and the celadon green of the lichen come to modulate the character’s radiance.
Beyond aesthetics, this piece questions our relationship with time and matter. By fixing a figure drawn from instantaneous media onto a support whose growth is by nature slow and fragile, the work invites a meditation on persistence. Bob’s smile, usually so dynamic, here takes on a contemplative dimension, almost fossilized in this paper moss. It is a celebration of vulnerability, where the artifices fade before the nobility of the wild, transforming a familiar image into a true organic relic.
