Léonard BORDES (1898-1969)
Intimately close to Rouen, which inspired unforgettable paintings, Léonard BORDES constantly showed his instinctive sensitivity in works rich and moving, an unmistakable mark of his talent that made him one of the most remarkable and prolific painters of the Rouen School. Born into a family of musicians, he himself a cellist at the Théâtre des Arts, faithful to the teaching of the Masters of the Regional School of Fine Arts, Léonard BORDES, by combining his two passions, understood and translated regional poetry, that of the Norman countryside and its metropolis from which arose simple and sincere paintings, melancholic or anecdotal, but always built in masses laid down quickly, and rhythmized by these gnarled trees, the uncertain sky, and whose poignant suggestion sometimes joined vibrant still lifes. Never did Léonard BORDES distort the picturesque testimony of a constant humanity, whose love of art accorded with some friendships, such as those with Gaston SEBIRE whom he accompanied in Spain, or with Tony FRITZ-VILARS whose pen knew so perfectly how to define the personality and destiny of this artist always infinitely dear to the hearts of Rouennais.
