Description from the seller

Marc Chagall - Tokyo Chagall Graveur (1987) - Original Vintage Marc Chagall Lithographic Exposition Poster
Printed by Atelier Mourlot-Paris on Arches wove paper. Stamped with the Mourlot Collection insignia.
30.3 in x 20.9 in (76.96 cm x 53.09 cm).

Poster for the "Marc Chagall engraver" exhibition in Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya) in 1987. Printed in high quality offset, partly in spot colors in the Mourlot workshops based on the lithograph "Daphnis and Chloé: The Lesson of Philetas" (Mourlot catalog raisonné #323).

Vintage posters in the Mourlot Collection are visually striking, authentic vintage prints. They are rare and beautiful works of art sought after by collectors and museums all over the world.

Originally created to advertise upcoming exhibits and cultural events, these prints were designed by the artists themselves in limited numbers and produced under the direction of master printers using the process of stone lithography.

Atelier Mourlot, Paris was the most sophisticated, respected and prolific manufacturer of these images. Over a 150 year history, Atelier Mourlot produced thousands of these prints, working with world-renowned artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Lautrec, Chagall and countless others. Offering the highest quality and the most vibrant colors, these works were all handcrafted by masters in their field.

Stone-lithography is an intricate and time-consuming process whereby each color or shade of color is printed separately from lithographic stones or plates. The prints included in this collection represent imagery from the greatest creative minds in art history paired with masters of the lithographic printmaking process.

Fernand Mourlot (1895-1988) actively invited the most cutting-edge contemporary artists of the time, such as Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Braque, and Léger, to his workshop. They were astounded by the high quality of the lithographs produced by the IMP. MOURLOT, and were immediately fascinated by the technique, which allows for a high degree of freedom in drawing directly on stone plates. The IMP. MOURLOT became a trendy place that produced a succession of works in collaboration with genius printmakers such as Fernand Mourlot and Charles Sorlier (1921-1990). In recent years, there has been an accelerating trend in art museums overseas, especially in the United States, to collect vintage lithograph posters produced by the IMP. MOURLOT.
