Description from the seller
Antique solid Indian teak coffee table with studs and iron reinforcements, India, second half of the 20th century
Important and fascinating square table of Indian origin, made of solid teak of notable density and weight, most likely from northern India and datable to the second half of the 20th century, circa 1950–1960. The piece features an extremely solid and compact structure, characterized by a thick upper top adorned with raised studs, a perimeter strip reinforced with forged iron elements, and robust turned legs, joined to the frame by curved metal brackets that ensure stability and durability over time. The combination of solid wood and wrought iron fittings reflects a traditional constructive craft typical of Indian artisanship, where functionality, durability, and symbolic value coexist in harmonious balance.
The teak used, a noble timber widely diffused on the subcontinent, is particularly valued for its natural resistance, structural stability, and the beauty of its patina, which in this specimen appears deep, warm, and authentic, with signs of wear consistent with age and use, contributing to the object's strong aesthetic character and tangible presence. The low and compact configuration is typical of traditional Indian coffee tables used both in daily domestic life and in ritual contexts, including spaces devoted to domestic puja, where such supports served as bases for offerings, sacred objects, or votive elements. This symbolic and practical function is reflected in the solidity and quality of the materials, designed to endure over time and accompany both spiritual and domestic life.
Conditions are good for the age, with original patina, signs of use, surface wear, and natural oxidation of the iron elements, all indicators of authenticity and history, without compromising stability or functionality.
