Description from the seller
The Expectation of the Waves
Artist: Mirian Gomeli
120 × 100 cm
Canvas, oil
The work “The Expectation of the Waves” is not merely a coastal landscape; it is the artist’s personal manifesto and a mirror of his inner state. Mirian Gomeli, himself a passionate surfer, translates onto the canvas the unique experience that only those who stand face to face with the power of nature can feel. The love for this sport and the experience in dealing with (or living with) the waves inspired him to this piece.
Concept and philosophy
Personal experience: For the artist, surfing is not just a physical activity—it is meditation and a dialogue with the world. The figure of a female surfer symbolizes the calm required while waiting for the “perfect wave.”
“Momentary Infinity”: Mirian captures the moment when time seems to stand still. The chaotic flight of the white birds emphasizes the energy of the sea, while the figure remains completely static.
Symbol – the surfboard: The yellow surfboard appears here as a connecting bridge between land and water. It is the instrument with which humans connect to the endless horizon.
Stylistic and technical features
Direction: Contemporary impressionism. The artist uses loose, expressive brushstrokes to capture the damp sea breeze and the breathing of the shore.
Color dramaturgy: Against a backdrop of deep blues and grays, the yellow surfboard together with the colorful pebbles on the shore create a visual rhythm that fills the work with optimism and vitality.
"This painting is an expression of the respect for the power of the sea and the patience that nature teaches humans. It is an expectation that itself becomes art."
Mirian Japaridze Gomeli was born in 1969 in Georgia. In 1994 he graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts with a focus on graphics. Since 1997 he has lived and worked in Berlin. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs in Europe, including in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland.
