Herb Ritts: L.A. Style describes the life and career of the legendary American photographer in a fascinating selection of famous and previously unpublished images and two insightful essays. Los Angeles was the home base of Herb Ritts (1952-2002), who became internationally known for distinctive nudes and images of models and celebrities. In the 1980s and 90s he was commissioned by leading fashion designers such as Armani, Gianfranco Ferré, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Valentino and Versace, as well as magazines such as GQ, Interview, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, to lend glamour to products and layouts. Largely autodidactic, Ritts developed his own style, which often works with the light and landscape of California and thus sets itself apart from the images of his New York colleagues. From the late 70s until his early death—2002, from AIDS-related complications—Ritts demonstrated with images in which the boundary between art and commerce is dissolved not only extraordinary imagination and outstanding technical skill; his work also stands as an exemplary fusion of art, popular culture, and business in the wake of the Pop Art of the 1960s and 70s. Paul Martineau, editor and author of the leading text, is Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. James Crump, author of the second essay, is Chief Curator and Curator of Photography at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
