In this extraordinary Book of Hours we find an Augustinian-type calendar that mentions the year of its creation, 1490. It also contains the Hours of the Virgin, penitential psalms, the Litany, the Office for the Dead, the Hours of the Cross, the Hours of the Holy Spirit, the Hours of the Trinity, prayers, Gospel readings, and the Seven Petitions to the Savior. The mention of Saint Louis, Louis of Orleans’s autograph, the future king Louis XII, and the portrait on folio 11v indicate that the manuscript belonged to him and was probably commissioned by him.
The illumination of this small manuscript, by Jean Colombe and his workshop, is truly exceptional both for its elaborate and richly varied illustrative concept, something rarely found in Books of Hours, and for its sumptuous floral margins. These margins are often divided into sections with grotesques, birds, animals, and various mottoes. The artist possesses a truly uninhibited imagination, with virtuosic technique and complete mastery of formal harmony, achieving a masterpiece.
In addition to the notarized certificate, it will be delivered with the original invoice.
