Description from the seller

Jacob Lindenberg
The Missions Journeys – ca. 1702

TITLE:
The Description of the REVISITS PAULI and of THE OTHER APOSTLES With their Lands and Kingdoms where the Gospel was preached.

DESCRIPTION:
Very interesting and decorative map of the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul and the other apostles, published by Jacob Lindenberg around 1702.

The map provides an overview of the areas and kingdoms where the Gospel was preached, with particular emphasis on Paul’s journeys, including his voyage to Rome. Various places are numbered 1–64, corresponding to the explanatory text.

* Scale: ca. 1 : 7,000,000
* Page dimensions: ca. 33.5 x 48 cm
* Orientation: North up

FRONT:
The title is located at the bottom and is framed by four scenes from the life of Paul, giving the map a strong narrative and didactic character.

At the top are two scale bars (6.9 and 6.0 cm), also surrounded by four scenes from the life of Paul, creating a harmonious and richly illustrated composition. Under Acts 14:11 is the imprint: “I. Lindenberg excudit.”. In the middle is a compass rose.

The text on the map is largely in French, indicating an international or Francophone readership.
The map bears a strong resemblance to the large so-called Court Map, but is produced in a more compact and handier format.

BACK:
The back is blank or contains the text:
“EXPLANATIONS About the Geographical depiction of the lands, sailed and walked by the Apostles and their dispatched Brothers, …”
Here the areas traveled by the apostles are explained in more detail.

CONDITION:
This map has been recently professionally restored, with cracks reinforced using Japanese paper. This Biblical land map from 1702 is in reasonable condition, free from mold and tears. The drawings on the map are good and place names readable. See photos.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
This map belongs to the tradition of biblical and apostolic maps from the early 18th century, in which cartography and biblical history come together. It served both as an illustration of the New Testament and for didactic use in church and educational contexts.

The combination of detailed travel routes, numbered place references, rich biblical scenes, and the French cartographic text makes this edition particularly appealing to collectors of:
* Biblical maps
* 18th-century Dutch cartography
* Paul iconography
* Missionary and church history

CONCLUSION:
A decorative and historically meaningful map of the missionary journeys of Paul and the other apostles, published by Jacob Lindenberg around 1702. A reasonably scarce and interesting collectible for enthusiasts of old maps, biblical prints, and early-18th-century religious cartography.
