A round, cheerful belly is its most distinctive attribute, a symbol of abundance and happiness
Cheerful, laughing face — an expression of joy and contentment
Prayer beads (mala) - around his neck and in his hand
Seated posture, relaxed and prosperous
Richly detailed robes with texture patterns
Cultural context: Budai is not actually a historical Buddha, but a Chinese Chan (Zen) monk from the 10th century who was later associated with Maitreya, the future Buddha. He symbolizes happiness, abundance, wisdom, and contentment.
