Set of 2 antique engravings – Biblical emblems from the 17th/18th century

A special and atmospheric duo of historical engravings, originating from an emblem book or illustrated Bible commentary from the 18th century. These small but powerful prints combine image and text in a characteristic way: moralizing Bible quotes in old Dutch are accompanied by symbolic depictions, typical for the rich emblem tradition of the early modern period.

The engravings show passages from the Biblical Book of Job and are executed in fine copper engraving, with elegant line work and beautiful typography. The scenes are rich in symbolism: human figures, attributes and allegorical elements refer to transience, justice and the human condition. The prints are professionally framed and provided with a passe-partout, making them ready to hang and giving them a warm, classical appearance.
