Description from the seller
Manuscript folio with an Indo-Persian polychrome & gold miniature + calligraphy (recto/verso)
Gouache/opaque watercolor and gilded highlights, border with vegetal decoration.
Recto: palace scene with calligraphy above.
Verso: calligraphic text with red rubrication (passage evoking the theory of the “point” and the “line” in calligraphy).
Text page - translation:
The passage explains, in substance, a classical idea from calligraphy treatises:
The point is the origin; the line proceeds from the point by extension/movement;
and the forms/letters are constructed from lines, with variations according to direction, length, curvature, etc.
Recto - translation:
the writing seems Persian/Arabic in literary style, most probably a couplet / poetic or narrative phrase that serves as the caption to the painting.
Dimensions: folio 16.5×23 cm; frame 29.5×36.5 cm.
Old state with losses and border wear (see photos).
