This is a sophisticated Japanese tea bowl (chawan) crafted by the esteemed Seto artist Sugiura Buntai (杉浦文泰) of the Uzukigama kiln (兎月窯).
This specific piece was created for the 1984 (Showa 59) Imperial New Year's Poetry Reading (Utakai Hajime), themed "Midori" (Green/Verdure). The bowl features a deep, lustrous black glaze contrasted by a vibrant, undulating green wave that perfectly captures the year's poetic theme.
Artist Profile: Sugiura Buntai (杉浦文泰)
Origin: Born in Seto, a historic center for Japanese ceramics.
