Description from the seller
SADOLETO, Jacopo (1477–1547). De liberis recte instituendis, liber. Lyon: Gryphium, 1535
8vo, small (150 × 100 mm), 150 pages.
Collation A-I8, K4, printer’s mark at the title page and on the recto of the last leaf with an engraved colophon (small wormholes repaired at the title page and the last 3 leaves). Later binding (18th century) in parchment.
Rare Second edition, only two years after the first, of one of the most important pedagogical treatises in western history. Jacopo Sadoleto (1477–1547), Italian humanist and churchman, published in 1533 the De pueris recte instituendis, holding—in his capacity as bishop of Carpentras—that the education of the young constituted his highest task. A friend of Erasmus (1466–1536), with whom he maintained a rich correspondence also on pedagogical topics, the Imago pueri Jesu posita in ludo literario is included in this volume. A learned humanist and devout believer, Sadoleto expresses a deep moral seriousness, forecasting in sensitivity the climate of the Counter-Reformation to which he devoted himself with fervor. He writes with a precise aim: to educate the youth of the higher professional classes and of families of modest landed property, a reality he knew well from direct experience in both France and Italy. No other humanist of the era, in educational matters, seems to have assimilated so fully the authentic spirit of Plato. The proposed goal is a liberal education, not subordinated to contingent technical overlays dictated by taste or necessity. The impression given by De liberis recte instituendis is that of a coherent pedagogical program, ethically grounded and firmly anchored in the classical tradition.
