Biography
Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most important fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, after his emigration he worked in Paris, Monaco and Los Angeles for international magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. With his uncompromising, erotically charged visual language, he shaped the visual culture of luxury fashion like few photographers of his time.
Newton photographed for Chanel and Hermès, among others, creating imagery that showcased elegance, power and sensuality. His unmistakable style—cool, staged, and at the same time provocative—influenced the aesthetics of other luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Patek Philippe, which to this day embody similar values of exclusivity and perfection.
His work is now represented in the world’s leading museums and collections and ranks among the most valuable works of contemporary photography. Helmut Newton remains a synonym for luxury, femininity, and the art of staging.
