Ancient key to wind a pocket watch
Era: late 19th century – early 20th century
Material: gilt brass with a steel stem
Shape: central octagonal body with a upper ring for attaching to a chain or fob
Decoration: central floral relief (four-petal motif / stylized leaves) with an incised geometric border
Function: the lower stem is the winding head, inserted into the watch’s arbor to tension the mainspring
It is a more elegant and ornamental key, typical of pocket accessories from the Victorian/Umbertine era, when even functional objects had aesthetic value.
