Description from the seller
SAND, George (1804-1876)
"Elle et Lui"
Paris: Calmann-Levy, 1929
8vo (19.7 x 14 cm)
"Elle et lui" is an autobiographical novel by the French writer, first published in 1859. It is a love novel freely inspired by the relationship George Sand (pseudonym of Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin) had with the writer Alfred de Musset (prior to his relationship with pianist Fryderyk Chopin), transposed into the painting milieu. The novel caused a scandal when published and sparked numerous articles in the press. It provoked a polemic with Paul, Alfred de Musset’s brother, who published a parody in response, "Lui et elle" (1860). The novel received several favorable reviews, particularly from the writer Honoré de Balzac and from the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel.
The author’s opposition to the temporalist and illiberal politics of the papacy cost her the Index of all her writings in December 1863.
Elegant edition printed on fine Velin du Marais paper and issued in only 1500 copies, all numbered (this copy no. 936). Reddish spots along the volume, as in other copies, but in excellent condition. Wonderful contemporary binding in full leather with multicolored morocco inlays and gold filigree and decorations. In an abstract style, the fine binding reflects the artistic sensibility of a certain current from the early 1920s. Editorial binding preserved inside. Graphite signature at the footnote, perhaps of owner or binder.
