Biography
Johan Boeckhorst (also Johann Bockhorst; 1605, Münster – 1668, Antwerp) was a German-Flemish Baroque painter and one of the foremost collaborators in the circle of Peter Paul Rubens.
Boeckhorst received his earliest training presumably in Münster and in the 1620s moved to Antwerp, where he joined the circle around Peter Paul Rubens. He worked on large-scale religious and mythological commissions and was later also connected with the workshop of Anthony van Dyck.
After Rubens’s death, Boeckhorst developed a more autonomous handwriting/style within Flemish High Baroque. His oeuvre comprises primarily altarpieces, religious histories, and mythological scenes. Characteristic features include a powerful figurative conception, dramatic movement, warm coloration, and a pronounced use of light in the Rubensian tradition.
He was active especially for churches in Antwerp, Flanders, and Westphalia. Because of his origin, he was also known in Antwerp as "Lange Jan" (Long John).
Today Boeckhorst is regarded as a significant representative of the second generation of Flemish Baroque painters, whose work stylistically sits between Rubens and the subsequent Antwerp School.
Due to the value and the measurements, shipping costs are somewhat higher.
