Ancient Roman silver seal ring with a small circular bezel bearing the inscription 'VIVAS', dating to the 2nd–3rd century AD, in good condition and wearable.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

Ancient Roman silver seal ring with a small circular bezel with the inscription 'VIVAS', arranged compactly in two lines. The ring has a slender, tapering hoop and a modestly raised bezel.
The inscription is rendered in reverse for use as a functional seal. When impressed into wax, the inscription would read correctly.

Outside diameter: ± 22,8 mm
Inside diameter: ± 16,5 mm
Bezel: ± 7,1 mm

Condition: good solid condition, intact and wearable. The surface shows a dark even patina with surface wear, consistent with age and use.

-> The Latin word VIVAS translates as “may you live” or “long life to you.” Such inscriptions were common on Late Roman and Early Byzantine rings and carried a wish for health, longevity or blessing. Rings bearing VIVAS were often used as personal signets and may also have had amuletic connotations.

-> Silver rings were worn across the Roman Empire by both men and women. They combined function, decoration, and identity, making them among the most recognisable forms of Roman personal jewellery.

Catawiki disclaimer:

Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
