Marina con scogli e mare mosso, an oil painting on cardboard from Italy dating to 1910–1920, sold with frame.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Giuseppe Rossi (Florence 1876 - Padua 1951)
Marina with rocks and a rough sea, ca. 1920.
Oil on cardboard
cm 23 x 17 (with the frame cm 39.5 x 33.5)

Suggestive seascape in a verist imprint: the artist builds the scene with a palette of deep greens-azures and blues, animated by whites of foam laid with dense and vibrant brushstrokes. The dark rocks in the foreground and on the left serve as a counterpoint to the luminosity of the breaking waves, while the veiled and cloudy sky creates a realistic atmosphere, almost “wind-battered coast.”
The painting is rich in materiality: the movement of the water is rendered with quick, intersecting strokes, capable of giving energy and depth to the marine surface.

The painting is signed at the lower right and bears on the back an inscription with the author’s name and the city of residence (Florence)

General condition of conservation with normal signs of time compatible with the age.

The work is sold with the frame as shown in the photo, which should be considered a compliment from the seller.

National and international tracked shipping by express courier.

Giuseppe Rossi, a pupil at the Florence Academy under Raffaello Sorbi and Giuseppe Ciaranfi, formed on the examples of verist painting, becoming a landscape painter and portraitist of international fame.
Exhibited in Italy and abroad, achieving wide public and critical acclaim. He debuted with a portrait at the Exhibition of the Society of Fine Arts in 1899 and with portraits or figure paintings he participated in all local exhibitions as well as many regional and national events. In 1904, with the “Portrait of Renato Brogi,” he won the first prize of the Promotrice di Belle Arti of Florence. In 1920 and 1922 two important solo exhibitions were dedicated to him in Florence.
He directed for a long time a well-established international private school of drawing and painting.
His works are found in important museums such as the Uffizi and Pitti in Florence and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
