Description from the seller
Russian icon of the 20th century painted in tempera on wooden panel. The work depicts Saint Theodosius of Kiev (of the Caves), central figure of Orthodox spirituality and founder of cenobitic monasticism in Russia.
The icon presents the Saint in monastic clothing, with one hand raised in a blessing gesture and the other holding the Gospel. The background features a dark red and gold bi-chromia, with identifying inscriptions in ancient Cyrillic still readable.
Iconography is classic: the Saint is depicted as an elderly monk (venerable) with a long white beard, in a blessing posture with the right hand and with a scroll or the Gospel in the left. The inscriptions beside the head in archaic Cyrillic confirm the identity: СНФН (San) ѲЕОДОСIЙ (Theodosius).
Technical Characteristics:
Subject: Saint Theodosius (Fëodosij Pečerskij).
Dimensions: Height 37.4 cm | Width 24.5 cm | Thickness 15 mm.
Condition: The icon is in original, unrestored condition. It shows losses of paint film coherent with the period and signs of age on the wooden support that guarantee its authenticity. The panel shows a slight natural convex warp.
Back: Exposed wood with a hook for hanging from a later period.
Notes:
A piece of great devotional charm, ideal for collectors of sacred Eastern art or as a high antique-style decorative object. The generous dimensions make it a focal point with strong visual impact.
