Description from the seller
Topeng masks hold an important place in Indonesian theatrical and ceremonial traditions, notably in Bali and Java. Used in the dance-theater called Topeng, they allow performers to embody characters drawn from historical narratives, legends, or royal chronicles.
Traditionally carved from light wood and then carefully painted, these masks feature highly codified traits: a pale, calm face often evokes a noble character, while more marked expressions represent comic figures or servants. The mask generally covers the entire face and imposes on the dancer precise gestural language to convey emotions.
Beyond their artistic function, Topeng masks also have a symbolic and spiritual dimension. In certain ceremonies, the performance is seen as a means of transmitting the history and values of the community, thus linking spectacle, cultural memory, and ritual.
