Description from the seller
Topeng masks occupy an important place in Indonesian theatrical and ritual traditions, particularly in Bali and Java. Used in the dance-theater called Topeng, they allow performers to embody characters drawn from historical narratives, legends, or royal chronicles.
Traditionally carved from light wood and then carefully painted, these masks feature very codified features: a calm white face often evokes a noble character, while more pronounced expressions represent comic figures or servants. The mask generally covers the entire face and imposes on the dancer a precise gesture to convey the emotions.
Beyond their artistic function, Topeng masks also possess a symbolic and spiritual dimension. In certain ceremonies, the performance is seen as a means of transmitting the history and values of the community, thus linking spectacle, cultural memory, and ritual.
