Antonio Merino Martínez (Valladolid, 1903 - Madrid, 1977), began his studies of drawing and painting in his hometown (Valladolid) with Professor Don José López Torres, and in Bilbao with Don Federico Sáenz.
He moved to Madrid in 1920 to enroll at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he received lessons from Professors Don Aurelio García Lesmes and Don Antonio Miguel Nieto.
He entered a competition organized by the Bilbao City Council (1925), winning the post, temporarily abandoning painting.
Sixteen years later he returned to painting in Bilbao, under the auspices of the Suizo group.
He exhibited his works in several shows, among them the Provincial de Bellas Artes, with the paintings Portrait of the widow Bejarano and Portrait of José María Eguidazu. In Barcelona in 1946 and in the First Hispano-American Art Biennial, held in Madrid in 1951, where he presented the painting Portrait of the painter Largacha.
He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Diputación de Vizcaya in 1945 and obtained other more modest prizes.
In 1948 the Bilbao City Council hired him to paint an oil portrait of Federico Moyua Salazar, the mayor of the town.
