Description from the seller
Antique Ivory Statue – Standing Nude Woman – Neoclassical – Europe – 19th century
Very refined antique ivory sculpture depicting a standing nude woman, executed in an elegant neoclassical style. The figure stands in a contrapposto pose and holds a loosely falling drape, partly covering the groin area, inspired by classical examples from antiquity (Venus Pudica tradition).
The sculpture is completely carved from solid ivory and shows high-quality craftsmanship, with carefully worked anatomy, soft body modulation, and a serene facial expression. The hair is coiffed in a classical updo and finely detailed. The whole sits on a matching ivory plinth.
Origin and dating
France, in the second half of the 19th century (ca. 1860–1880). In this period ivory sculptures with classical themes were popular salon objects among the affluent bourgeoisie.
Material
Solid ivory with natural grain structure and visible warm patina
Condition
Good antique condition with normal signs of age and discoloration appropriate for ivory
Fine natural hairline cracks
Small loss/damage to the drape in the hand (see photos) and restoration fracture line visible on the right arm.
Comes with a certified expert declaration and EU CITES certificate.
