Alec Soth
American, born 1969
Alec Soth was born in 1969 in the USA. In 2004 he was nominated for Magnum Photos and in 2006 appointed as a member. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Soth uses an 8 x 10 camera from the late 1980s, with which he creates almost painterly images. He follows the elaborate process of using the large-format camera and says he is lucky if on a shooting day he can make one or two takes.
He received fellowships from the McKnight and Jerome Foundations and was awarded the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2003. His photographs are represented in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Walker Art Center. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial and the São Paulo Biennale.
His first book, Sleeping by the Mississippi, appeared in 2004, his second, Niagara, in 2006. Soth's latest publications, Songbook and Gathered Leaves, appeared in 2015, and a major exhibition of his work was shown at the Media Space of the Science Museum in London. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery in New York and the Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis.
