Biography
James Rizzi (1950–2011) was an American pop artist internationally known for his vividly colored, three-dimensional cityscapes and his unmistakably cheerful visual language. After studying at the University of Florida, Rizzi moved to New York, where, since the 1970s, he established an independent position between Pop Art, Urban Art, and graphic art.
Characteristic of James Rizzi’s artworks are bright colors, comic-like figures, optimistic messages, and the 3D paper technique he developed, in which several layers are mounted on top of one another. His motifs—often New York City, urban scenes, music, and everyday situations—made him one of the most popular representatives of contemporary Pop Art.
In addition to paintings and 3D graphics, Rizzi created limited editions, sculptures, and design projects (including for everyday objects and architectural projects). James Rizzi graphics and originals are collected internationally and are particularly in high demand on the European art market.
With his accessible, life-affirming aesthetics, James Rizzi is regarded as an important catalyst for a commercially successful, audience-oriented Pop Art position following the classic 1960s generation.
