Castore Durante's New Herbarium. In Venice by Gio. Giacomo Hertz, 1667. A rare seventeenth-century illustrated edition of the famous treatise on botany and medicine by the renowned Italian physician, botanist, and poet. The herbarium gathers over 950 medicinal plants from Europe and the East and West Indies, describing their names, species, shape, place of origin, healing properties, and use as medicines. Binding in half parchment. Frontispiece in red and black. Large printer’s mark engraved at the frontispiece. Text in two columns. Illustrated by hundreds of figures depicting every plant or herb described in the text. About ten leaves are missing at the beginning of the text and about fifteen at the end. Dimensions 32 x 22 cm, pp. 8nn, 442, 10nn. Good condition.
