Evasio Montanella was one of the major Genoese painters straddling the 19th and 20th centuries.
He attended the Ligustica Academy of Genoa, as a pupil of Cesare Viazzi and Pietro Gaudenzi. He exhibited at the Promotrice Genovese and at the Sindacali.
In 1929 the Society of Fine Arts dedicated a personal exhibition of fifty works to him and in the same year he was named Academic of Merit at the Ligustica.
Regarding his exhibitions, we note the Buenos Aires show, 1923, at the Galleria Pesaro in Milan in 1929, at Palazzo Rosso, 1932, the Roman Quadriennale of 1935, and finally the posthumous exhibitions at the Rotta Gallery in 1952 and 1955.
The most recent one, held in 1994 at the Galleria Arte Casa in Genoa, followed.
A painter of great sensitivity, he carried out his artistic activity by depicting, particularly, seascape scenes and characteristic aspects of the fishermen’s environment (predominantly the Riviera di Prà).
He also represented, with notable skill, figures indoors, which brings him clearly close to themes dear to Italian 20th-century art.
A painter who remained throughout life deeply tied to his homeland and his people: the beaches and the sea of the Ponente Riviera, the fishermen, the children, the humble workers, whom he brought to the canvas with his unmistakable, instinctive brushstroke, capturing in a participatory way their particularities and expressions.
His works move beyond the narrow scope of regional painting due to their high quality and the modernity of the pictorial research, in step with artists like Casorati and Carrà.
His works include the Genoa Nervi collection at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Genova Nervi “Vecchi marinai”, and works at the Church of San Rocco in Genova Prà.
